MEDIA NOTE – – Here are basic facts relating to the two major post-season cross country events, at which a number of Rhode Island runners are expected to compete. The Northeast regional qualifiers for both of these national events will be held on Saturday, 29 Nov. All races are 3.1 miles in distance.
FOOT LOCKER NATIONALS: The regional qualifier will be run at Van Cortlandt Park, in New York City. The top 10 finishers qualify. The national championships will be held on 13 Dec. at Morley Field, Balboa Park, San Diego, California. This race is not a team event.
NIKE TEAM CROSS COUNTRY NATIONALS: The Northeast qualifier will be run at Bowdoin Park, Wappingers Falls, N.Y. on 29 Nov. Harriers from New England, New Jersey and Pennsylvania will compete. The top two teams from each regional event – plus four at-large teams selected by committee – WILL qualify. Also, the top five individual finishers NOT from a qualifying team will also go to the U.S. event. The Nike XC Nationals will be held on 6 Dec. at Glendoveer Golf Course, Portland, Oregon.

Course Notes: Last year, Barrington High’s Emma Mc Millan qualified for the Nike meet as an individual. She posted a fourth-place time of 18:31 at Wappingers Falls. The 2013 Nike Nationals were staged at the Portland (Ore.) Meadows race track. Mc Millan came in 45th with a time of 18:19 . . . No local runner qualified for the ’13 Foot Locker event.
