SENTINELS WIN 1ST GIRLS’ TITLE SINCE 1972;

RAMS NET BOYS’ CROWN, FIRST SINCE ‘78

Hope’s “Q” good for 40 points, plus 2 state records

R.I. Track & Field Foundation

7 June  – – Powered by depth in the field events, the Smithfield High girls’ track program won its first state team championship since 1972 on Saturday at the R.I. State Track & Field Championships, held at Brown Stadium. The Sentinels scored 83 points to 78 for second-place Hope, which received a 40-point performance from its fantastic senior Quashira “Q” Mc Intosh.

On the boys’ side of the meet, La Salle copped its first team title since 1978 (its 13th overall), overcoming strong challenges from Barrington and East Providence. Riding on performances of a crack distance corps as they have all season, the Rams totaled 80 points, to 69 for second-place Barrington and 65 for the Townies, who placed third.

GIRLS: Sentinels’ win bridges 43 years; “Q” does it again; 2 for Hicks

The Sentinels last won a team title in 1972, at the inception year of the girls’ track league.  (See “Oval Sidebar’’.) “I can’t even . . . Well, this is the greatest moment in my life,’’ said a breathless John Marchand, who has coached Smithfield girls’ track and cross country for the past 13 seasons.

Besides overall scoring depth, the Sentinels picked up wins in the long jump, javelin and hammer competitions. Junior Meagan Malloy threw 168-9 (51.43) to win the hammer. Alyssa Colbert, another Sentinel junior, took the javelin with a throw of 123-4 (37.59), and senior Stephanie Mattson won the long jump with an 18-foor (5.48) effort.

Meanwhile on Saturday, “Q” Mc Intosh cemented her reputation as one of the greatest prep female sprinters the state has seen. Her sweep of the 100, 200 and 400-meter races replicated that of two previous Hope High stars: Interscholastic League Hall of Famer Leah Grant, and Angie Quiah. En route to her heroics, “Q” managed to break two R.I. state records, and add 10 more points to her day’s output by anchoring the Blue Wave’s winning 4×100 relay.

For the second year in a row, Mc Intosh mined gold in the 100 and 200. On Saturday  she broke her own state mark in the 100 with a time of 11.82 in negative wind. She clocked a meet-record 24.32 to take the 200 meters. If that weren’t enough, “Q” beat last year’s 400-meter champ – Classical’s May Stern – in a state-record time of 55.44. That clocking eliminate the previous mark of 55.60, set at the 2012 New Balance National meet by East Greenwich’s Jaimee Dorsey.

“My goal was the triple crown,’’ said Mc Intosh, who will attend the University of Lincoln, Nebraska in the fall. “After my races my mind just went blank. I didn’t know anything about [state] records.’’

“Q” began her day by running anchor leg on Hope’s winning 4×100-meter relay. Juniors Chevell Burgess, Isis Hack and Destiny Hughes-Barnes rounded out the Blue wave quartet, which clocked 48.06.

It was also a good day for Classical High senior Alva Hicks, who took home two gold medals. She broke her own state discus record with a toss of 147-9 (45.03 meters), and put the shot 39-9.25 (12.12).

The 3000 meters belonged to La Salle senior Sheridan Wilbur. She clocked a meet-record 9:56.54. That meet standard had been on the books for 17 years; it was run by Portsmouth High great, and RIIL Hall of Famer, Laura Turner. The Rams’ Eliza Rego beat back a challenge from teammate Wilbur in the 1500, turning in a time of 4:32.42, to Wilbur’s 4:33.24. “It was all about scoring points for our team,’’ Rego said.

Marissa Mc Phillips, a junior from Narragansett High, ran a strong 2:14.37 to win the 800 meters. “Oh, my God, I’m so excited,’’ said Mc Phillips, who did not place here last year. “I like to go out fast, and stay out,’’ she said of her race strategy.

Pilgrim’s Melanie Brunelle captured the high and triple jumps.

BOYS: Team supremacy goes to the wire;  Salisbury, Djero impressive

With 18 events scored, La Salle held a slim 3-point lead on Barrington. But the Rams picked up eight points in the final event: the 4×400.

Jack Salisbury, La Salle’s fleet “long ranger’’ clocked 3:58.24 to win the 1500 meters by 24 1/100ths of a second over teammate Matt Bouthillette (3:58.48.) “It keeps you honest,’’ said Salisbury of the tough competition. “Time wasn’t a concern.’’

In another squeaker, Salisbury fended off a challenge from North Kingstown senior Ian Connors in the 800 meters. The Ram runner went 1:55.25, to Connors’ 1:55.40. Salisbury also ran a leg on La Salle’s winning 4×800 relay (7:58.80), along with Dan Paiva, Jake Grundy and Chris Shakespeare.

Nathan Narcisse, a Classical junior, was double-gold. He clocked 14.62 in the 110 high hurdles, and 40.22 to take the 300 intermediates. Top-ranked hammer man Bobby Colantonio threw 234-7 (71.50) to win the hammer over teammate Adam Kelly (227-11/69.46).

Donation Djero, Central High’s reliable sophomore sprint star, won the 100 in 10.98, and ran a leg on the Knights’ winning 4×100 relay, aided by Dametrius O’Connor, Austin Wolo and Lemat Mc Fadden. They combined for a time of 43.31.

Oval Note: The 70th annual New England Outdoor Championships will take place on 13 June at Thornton Academy in Saco, Maine . . . La Salle won the state’s first four state track titles, from ’47 to ’50.

OVAL SIDEBAR: ’72 State girls’ championship included a softball throw

Forty-three years ago, the fledgling girls’ track program at Smithfield was coached by Cindy Neal, who retired last month as longtime athletic director at Bay View. In that first state championship, the Sentinels scored 40.5 points over second-place Warren High. (Warren High – which decades ago merged with neighboring Bristol High to form Mt. Hope Regional, would go on to win the girls’ team title the following year.) Among the events offered back then was a softball throw, in which a Smithfield girl named Raposa finished fourth with a distance of 177-6. Smithfield’s other win that year included Jane Bissell’s in the high jump with a clearance of  4 feet, 9.75 inches.
