Classical High senior May Stern seems to be making a practice of breaking indoor dash records. Last week, Stern eliminated Madeleine Berkson’s R.I. state 400-meter record with her time of 55.41 at a meet in the Armory Track Center, New York City. On Saturday on the same banked oval, Stern bettered the state standard in the 300 meters at the Armory Invitational. She was clocked at 38.86 seconds for seventh spot overall. The previous record of 38.89 was held by Hope High’s Quashira “Q” McIntosh, and performed at the same meet a year ago.
In the boys; 25-pound (11.36-kilogram) weight throw, top U.S.-ranked Bobby Colantonio, of Barrington High, threw a winning distance of 80 feet, 1 inch (24.41 meters). Colantonio’s mark was 3.25 (0.92 meters) feet off the state record of 83-3.25/25.38m), thrown by former Eagle teammate Adam Kelly last year.
Stern, the state’s defending 300-meter runner, was competing for the first time at the Armory Invitational. “It was awesome,’’ she said. “I was in the second heat . . . and I was able to catch up to the top two runners by the last curve. I stuck with them until the end. Their competition really pushed me to the best of my ability. It was a great experience.’’
Stern was the sole Rhode Islander on the Invitational track over the weekend. In the throwing circle nationally-ranked Courtney Jacobsen, of Toll Gate High, finished third in the girls’ 20-pound (9-kilogram) event. Her mark was 53-3.25 (16.24).
Woonsocket High’s Jared Briere came in second to Colantonio in the boys’ weight; he got off a toss of 68-9.25 (20.96). Other Rhode Island finishers in that event:
5, Dilyn Cote, Woons. 62-4 (19.00); 6, Jacob Greenless, Woons. 60-1.25 (18.32); 7, Mike Coppolino, Cumberland 59-3.50 (18.07).
