28 Feb. – – La Salle Academy senior Jack Salisbury added to his 2015-16 indoor track laurels on Sunday at the 29th annual New England Indoor Championships at the Reggie Lewis Track Center, Boston. Salisbury clocked a new Rhode Island indoor record in the 1000 meters with a winning time of 2 minutes, 28.40 seconds. His performance betters a 27 year-old mark of 2:28.97 set by St. Raphael’s Andrew Butler at the 1989 Yale Invitational meet. Salisbury finished sixth in this race last year. The rangy Ram “Long Ranger’’ seemed primed to set a new 1000-meter standard. At last weekend’s State Championship he won the event in 2:33.40. (He also mined state gold in the 1500.)
Salisbury’s Ram teammate David “DJ” Principe led the pack in the two-mile run. In the process, Principe’s winning time of 8:59.05 (=8:19.1 @ 3000m) set a new R.I. record. That mark (9:02.580 was set by Westerly’s Andrew Springer in 2009; it’s another one of Springer’s records broken this season by a La Salle distance man. Salisbury’s 4:08.33 mile time bettered the former Bulldog runner. Principe holds the R.I. record for 3000 meters (8:26.51).
La Salle senior Eliza Rego successfully defended her New England Indoor mile title on Sunday at the 29th regional meet at the Reggie Lewis Track Center, Boston. Rego, this year’s Rhode Island 1500-meter champ, clocked 4 minutes 53.84 seconds (= 4:32.2 @ 1500 meters) on the banked Reggie Lewis oval on Sunday. Rego won last year’s New England mile in a meet-record 4:52.83.
In the boys’ long jump, it was South Kingstown junior Anthony Shepard going 22-0.50 (6.71 meters) for the gold. Shepard won this year’s state long jump crown with a leap of 21-11.50 (6.69).
Classical High senior Nate Narcisse clocked 7.60 to win his second straight New England 55-meter hurdle event. Narcisse, too, entered Sunday’s meet as the state champion in that event (7.65). Classical took home another gold medal as senior speedster May Stern clocked 38.94 to win the 300 meters. Stern, who holds the R.I. 300-meter record (38.86), won the 2016 state title with a time of 40.15.
