9 June – – Barrington High senior won the New England Hammer Championship in the boys’ division, while the girls’ 4-kilo hammer throw was captured by Toll Gate senior Courtney Jacobsen. The meet was held on Wednesday at Conley Stadium.
Colantonio, top-ranked nationally with the high school weight (5.44-kilo) implement, got off a winning throw of 246 feet, 3 inches (75.96 meters).
Jacobsen’s winning mark was 184-5 (56.21). Jacobsen is ranked No. 3 in the U.S. She threw 180-1 (54.88) to win this year’s state hammer crown.
Oval Note: Colantonio is a three-time R.I. hammer champ, having won the State Meet last weekend (246-5/75.10). He is only the second competitor to have claimed three hammer titles in meet history; Classical’s Alvin Jackson (1970, ’71 and ’72) was the other.
