3 Oct. – – The hurricane passing off the mid-Atlantic seaboard canceled Saturday’s Great American Cross Country Festival in Cary, N.C. Teams from La Salle (girls’) and Hendricken had entered in the event. The meet will not be rescheduled.
“We were in Fredericksburg [Va.] Thursday night when we found out,’’ said Hawk head coach Jim Doyle. “The [Cary] parks department closed down the park. They had no choice.’’ Doyle and his team stayed the night in Fredericksburg, and drove back to Rhode Island the next morning.
The girls’ team from La Salle, meanwhile, were about to board a plane for North Carolina on Friday morning when coach Kelly Martin received news of meet’s cancellation. Martin subsequently entered her squad in the “Maine Cross Country Festival of Champions’’, which was held on Saturday at Troy Howard Middle School in Belfast, Me. The boys’ and girls’ teams from Cumberland were also entered.
