14 Dec. – – North Kingstown’s Sam Toolin, competing for the Sentinel Striders, won the boys’ 13-14 age group 4000-meter run at the Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships, held Saturday in Albuquerque, N.M.
Toolin clocked 13:17.1 in high altitude, and under rainy conditions. He finished 13 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher: Kevin Leyva, of California. In team scoring, the Striders placed seventh of 29 teams. A total of 345 runners answered the gun for this particular race.
As a Skipper freshman, Toolin ran undefeated in race competition this fall. He placed fourth at the State Championships (15:57), and was sixth in New England (16:19) at the regional meet in Vermont a week later.
