20 Dec. – – The indoor track season may be just getting off the ground, but Barrington High senior Adam Kelly has already taken off.
Kelly, the Eagles’ weight man extraordinaire, on Saturday got off the nation’s best distance mark thus far in the boys’ 25-pound weight throw. He tossed a winning 80 feet, 1.50 inches (24.42 meters). Kelly’s mark on Saturday is a little more than a foot shy of the 14 year-old Rhode Island state WT record, held by Hendricken’s Josh Mc Caughey (81-8.75/24.91m). In addition, Kelly took the shot with a put of 50-2 (15.29).
The annual R.I. Track Coaches Assocation (RITCA) Co-Ed Invitational, held at the PCTA track facility, saw many such good performances, which augers well for the upcoming 2014-15 indoor campaign.
In the girls’ weight circle, Classical senior Alva Hicks was mining gold of her own. Hicks threw the 20-pound ball a winning 54-3 (16.53) and put the shot 39-3 (11.96) to take that events. Oceana Williams, Cranston West’s senior speedster, captured two events. Williams clocked 43.28 to win the girls’ 300-meter dash, and went 7.51 to claim gold in the 55 meters.
And La Salle junior Eliza Rego took care of business in winning the girls’ 1000 (3:03.86), and the 3000 meters in a race against Cumberland’s Amy Laverty. Rego clocked 10:27.15 t0 Laverty’s 10:52.16.
The boys’ 3000 meters was a back-and-forth affair between La Salle teammates DJ Principe and Matt Bouthillete. Ram sophomore Jake Grundy, meanwhile, nailed down the third spot. It was clear Principe and Bouthillette were pacing one another, with sophomore Princpe hitting the tape in 8:46.45, and Bouthillette placing second in 8:46.53.
“We agreed to work together,’’ said Principe, the state’s cross country champ this past fall. “We set a smart pace. We wanted to get out in front and control the race. Today went well.’’
The girls’ 1500 meters was a battle between Lily Foulkes, a senior from Wheeler School, and the Clippers’ Nichole Barger. Foulkes, coming off a successful cross country season in the SENE prep school league, went 4:56.16 for the win on Saturday. Barger, also a senior, clocked 4:58.28 for second place. “I felt like I had a lot left,’’ said Foulkes. ‘My goal was to go under 5 minutes.’’ Foulkes was 2:37 at the 800-meter split.
Toll Gate senior Erika Pena took the girls’ 55 hurdles in 9.13. In the boys’ long jump, Rogers High junior Yaqoob Iqbal leapt 20-3.75 (6.19) to capture that event. Ram sophomore Jack Salisbury – a main ingredient in his team’s distance juggernaut, won the boys’ 1500 in 4:05.57. Teammate Jim Placco went 2:38.42 to take the 1000 meters. Jose Santos, a promising junior from Coventry, clocked a winning 36.49 in the boys’ 300.
