BOYS: It’s D.J., wire-to-wire; Hawks’ Grizzetti crosses line second
Principe, the first sophomore to win the state boys’ title since Cumberland’s Jerry Bonner did it in 1998, got off the gun in super-charged fashion, and never relinquished his lead. The cold temperatures, he said, “Wasn’t easy. But my strategy was to hold on. The course was fine, and we were lucky there were no [wind] gusts. I wanted to take control of the race.’’
“This was all about team,’’ said Ram senior Dan Paiva, who finished third (15:55). “That’s all we were thinking about. We had a plan to kick it in.’’
Hendricken senior Tom Grizzetti was second in 15:51 in front of Paiva. Ram junior Matt Bouthillette placed fourth in 16 minutes, with Hawk junior Dom Parlato hitting the tape in fifth spot (16:02). Completing the top seven places were Cumberland junior Sean Laverty (6th, 16:03), and Noah Barreto, an East Greenwich senior finishing seventh in 16:15.
Course Notes: This was the seventh cross country championship run under the auspicious of the Bill Falk Fund/R.I. Track and Field Foundation . . . Wheeler School senior Lily Foulkes on Friday won the SENE prep league girls’ cross country championship. Her time over 3.1 miles on a fairly flat course at St. Andrew’s School in Barrington, was 19 minutes, 16 seconds; better than two minutes ahead of the next finisher. On Oct. 18, Foulkes was the top Rhode Islander over the line in the girls’ Championship Division race at the Brown University Invitational. She clocked 18:28 on the Goddard Park course, good for sixth place overall . . . The 80th annual New England Cross Country Championsips will be held next Saturday in Manchester, Conn. The boys’ race goes off at 11:30 a.m., with the girls’ stat an hour later. At the 2013 event in New Hampshire, Barrington was the top R.I. girls’ team, finishing second. The La Salle boys enter this Saturday’s meet as defending regional champs. The Eagles’ Emma Mc Millan placed sixth overall as the first local finisher (17:55). Hendricken senior Colin Tierney was fifth in the boys’ race, while La Salle sophomore Jack Salisbury was No. 7 over the line at Derryfield Park.
