14 March – – La Salle’s distance juggernauts invaded the three-day New Balance National Scholastic Indoor Track & Field Championships this weekend, and came away with two gold medals, not to mention new Rhode Island and New England indoor records in the 4×1-mile relay.

Barrington High’s Adam Kelly went through the indoor season as the country’s top-ranked practitioner in the 25-pound weight throw, and at the Armory Track Center on Sunday the big senior put the finishing touch on that status by emerging as United States champ. Kelly topped the field with a mark of 81 feet, 5.25 inches (24.82 meters.)

Competing on Saturday, the La Salle girls’ 4-mile relay quartet of Karina Tavares, Audrey O’Neill, Sheridan Wilbur and Eliza Rego bettered a 10 year-old R.I. state record by clocking 20 minutes, 26.13 seconds to claim the gold medal. The previous record belonged to a relay from Westerly High, who clocked 21:21.38 at the 2005 National Scholastic Championships. Finishing second was a relay from the Corning TC of New York in 20:40.23.

The boys’ “Long Rangers’’ of La Salle – dominant all season – entered the Nationals on Saturday with a real shot at toppling the United States 4-mile relay indoor record of 17:07.17, set last year by a foursome from Christian Brothers Academy. Although the Rams fell shy of that goal, the combination of Dan Paiva, Matt Bouthillette, DJ Principe and anchor Jack Salisbury were nonetheless impressive. They posted a winning time of 17:11.07, eclipsing the state and New England record of 17:20.20 set in 2010 by a Chariho High relay. (The Chargers’ performance was a national standard before elimination by the Christian Brothers’ team.) Coming in behind the Rams on Saturday was the Davis TC of Utah in 17:11.44.

It’s “Q’’ to the thousandth

Hope High’s amazing senior Quashira “Q” Mc Intosh on Saturday forced the Armory timing system to go to the 1/1000th of a second to decide her finish in the semi-final heat of the 200 meters. “Q” wound up placing fourth to Zola Golden, of New York City. Golden hit the tape at 24.068 seconds – good for third spot –  to “Q’s” 24.069. In tenths of seconds, Mc Intosh’s time came to 24.07, which breaks her R.I. and New England records; both set earlier this month on the Armory oval. Going into Sunday’s 200 finals, “Q” was ranked No. 3 U.S. In the finals, she clocked 24.37 for seventh place.

OVAL NOTES:  Rhode Islanders earning All-American honors were: Karina Tavares, Audrey O’Neill, Sheridan Wilbur, Eliza Rego, La Salle; Alva Hicks, Lysah Russell, Classical; Adam Kelly, Bobby Colantonio, Barrington; Matt Bouthillette, DJ Principe, Jack Salisbury, Dan Paiva, La Salle . . . At last December’s multi-state R.I. Classic at the PCTA track, Kate Hall, a senior from Lake Region High in Maine, won the long jump by a margin of nearly two feet; a 19 foot, 7.50-inch (5.98-meter) effort. Hall went on to win the New England long jump title in Boston last month by leaping 20-6 (6.25), a new regional record. At the National Scholastics this weekend, Hall maintained her position as this season’s No. 1 female long jumper in the country, while improving her P-R by more than five inches. On her second attempt of the day at the Armory, Hall won the national title with a distance of 20-11.25 (6.38), a meet record. On the all-time U.S. prep indoor list, as maintained by Track & Field News, Hall’s 6.38-meter jump is ranked seventh. Also at this weekend’s Nationals, Hall finished sixth in the 60-meter dash (7.47).

MEDIA NOTE: Competitors were entered in this meet either by state or track/running club affiliation. (Athletes from Canada also competed). For the sake of consistency with past RIT&FF reports, we ID’d the local athletes by the school they attend.
