11 Feb. – – La Salle junior Eliza Rego eliminated a 12 year-old R.I. state record in the girls’ 1500 meters Tuesday night at the non-scoring Headley “Last Chance’’ qualifier at PCTA. Rego, last year’s state runner-up in the 1000, 1500 and 3000 meters, clocked a winning time of 4 minutes 34.30 seconds. That performance bettered the existing state mark of 4:34.78, which was set, en route to the mile, by Westerly High’s Samantha Gawrych at the 2003 National Scholastic Indoor Championships in New York. On Tuesday, Rego beat teammate Sheridan Wilbur by five seconds. Rego also won the 1000 in 3:00.34.
Cumberland junior Meaghan Scullin went 18-2.75 (5.55) to win the long jump competition. She also cleared 5-2 (1.57) to take the high jump.
